LayarHijau.com–The historical fantasy drama Legend of Zang Hai, starring top Chinese stars Xiao Zhan and Zhang Jingyi, dropped its final episode early for Youku VIP members on June 3. The emotional finale has left viewers reeling with tears, betrayal, and ultimate revenge.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major plot details from the final episode.

According to Upmedia, in a shocking twist, Zang Hai (played by Xiao Zhan) discovers that the man who once saved him from a fire as a child—Minister of Revenue Zhao Bingwen (Tian Xiaojie)—is actually the third and final enemy responsible for wiping out his entire family. After using Zang Hai to retrieve the mythical Sunflower Seal, which grants control over ghost soldiers, Zhao discards him once the seal becomes useless. Zang Hai is imprisoned, tortured, and nearly killed by a brutal punishment involving layers of wet paper that slowly suffocate the victim.

On the brink of death, Zang Hai sees a dreamlike vision of his late parents—his father (Wallace Chung) and mother (Michelle Chen). Reunited in the mist, he falls into their arms, sobbing uncontrollably as his mother gently strokes his face and says, “Good boy, don’t cry.” Just as he pleads to stay, his father urges him to keep living and to honor the family legacy.

But it’s all a dream.

Zang Hai wakes up to find his master, Gao Ming (Liang Chao), had given him a secret potion that allowed him to fake his death. He and Princess Xiang An Tu (Zhang Jingyi) manage to flee the capital with Gao Ming’s help. But shortly after, Zang Hai discovers a farewell letter—his master had been poisoned in prison and was dying. From the carriage window, Zang Hai watches in anguish as his mentor collapses outside the city gates. The heart-wrenching scene triggered an outpouring of emotions online, with many viewers saying they were brought to tears.

The journey continues as Zang Hai and Xiang An Tu reach Dongxia, only to be caught by the new queen, who fears her sister might steal the throne. She forces Xiang An Tu into a marriage with the aging leader of the Eighteen Tribes, and imprisons Zang Hai. He later escapes and joins forces with General Zhuang Zhixing (Zhou Qi). In a dramatic turn, it’s revealed that Zhuang had been working with Zang Hai all along to bring down Zhao Bingwen. The villain ultimately meets his downfall in his own trap.

With his revenge complete, Zang Hai steps away from politics, choosing instead a free-spirited life of wandering with Xiang An Tu. Xiao Zhan’s performance in the finale, especially the farewell scenes with his parents and master, has earned widespread praise for its raw emotional power.

So, is Legend of Zang Hai’s ending a happy one, or is it a bittersweet goodbye? Perhaps it’s both—a satisfying close to a long, painful journey, but one that comes at great emotional cost.
