The actor, who faced criticism from Chinese netizens over his “greasy” (over-the-top) performance in Fireworks of My Heart two years ago, is set for a comeback with a new costume drama alongside rising star Zhang Jingyi.
According to reports from Upmedia, Yang Yang will lead the upcoming series Flowers Falling in the Moon City, directed by Deng Ke — the mind behind The Prisoner of Beauty. Zhang Jingyi, who recently rose to fame starring opposite Xiao Zhan in Legend of Zang Hai, will play the female lead.
Originally, the male lead role was expected to go to Zhang Linghe (The Best Thing) or Deng Wei (Lost You Forever). But netizens reveal that the scriptwriter, Lian Qiao, has been a devoted Yang Yang fan for over a decade. This fandom is believed to be the reason Yang Yang replaced Zhang Linghe as the lead.
Lian Qiao, also known for writing Mengfei Comes Across, publicly expressed his admiration for Yang Yang years ago on social media, saying, “I write and you act, you must wait for me!” He even shared how he tried to recommend Yang Yang for projects but was turned down, highlighting his determination to support the actor.

Flowers Falling in the Moon City is based on the xianxia novel Flowers Falling in Yuedu, Flowers Blooming in Canghai by Junzi Yize. It tells the tale of the ancient god Yinze and the complicated relationship between him and Luo Wei, a princess who escapes after an attack and later joins an immortal sect.
Filming is scheduled to begin in October, and fans are eager to see the chemistry between Yang Yang and Zhang Jingyi in this highly anticipated production.
