LayarHijau – The drama Yummy Yummy Yummy (宴遇永安), starring Li Yunrui and Wang Yinglu, officially aired its final episode on October 21. Initially promoted as a lighthearted romantic comedy with culinary themes, the series concluded with a surprising blend of romance and time-travel fantasy, ending in a fateful reunion of the lead couple in the modern world.
In the finale, Shen Shaoguang (played by Wang Yinglu) and Lin Yan (Li Yunrui) finally get married after enduring countless obstacles. The two were once believed to be unable to marry because the Shen family thought Lin Yan was their ancestor. The misunderstanding is resolved when Shen Shaojie (Chang Long) reveals that, according to their grandfather’s story, the family’s true ancestor was Pei Fei—a close friend of Lin Shaoyin, not Lin Yan. With the truth revealed, the couple ties the knot in a warm and romantic ceremony.
Their happiness, however, is short-lived. Prince Zhao’s son, Li Ang (Ma Hao), sets fire to the Shen family restaurant. In a desperate attempt to save Lin Yan, Shen Shaoguang pushes him out of the burning building. The event mysteriously transports the entire Shen family back to the modern era, leaving Lin Yan behind in the past to live out the rest of his life in loneliness.
This emotional scene moved many viewers, especially as Lin Yan is shown maintaining the family restaurant alone, rewriting their story, and preserving their memories until his final days. Yet, the drama doesn’t end there. In the modern timeline, Shen Shaoguang continues to run her family restaurant, using the recipes and cooking skills she learned in the past. One day, while visiting the ruins of the old restaurant, she sees a man who looks exactly like Lin Yan. He meets her gaze and smiles, bringing tears to her eyes—a symbolic reunion that offers a bittersweet yet hopeful ending.
Although the drama provided emotional closure, Yummy Yummy Yummy did not achieve the level of success its producers had anticipated. Marketed as a potential hit in the “culinary romance” genre, the show featured surprisingly few food-related scenes. Moreover, Lin Yan’s revenge subplot felt underdeveloped and failed to balance the light palace politics woven into the narrative.
The script was written by Ji Sangrou and Ding Lu, the same writers behind Love in the Clouds (入青雲), which starred Hou Minghao and Lu Yuxiao. Compared to Love in the Clouds, Yummy Yummy Yummy was considered less refined, leading to lower ratings and weaker audience engagement. In its final episodes, even advertising sponsors had withdrawn from its broadcast slots.
Nevertheless, the chemistry between Li Yunrui and Wang Yinglu received wide praise. The two previously gained attention for their pairing in Blossom (九重紫), which propelled Li Yunrui to rising stardom among young Chinese actors. With Yummy Yummy Yummy now concluded, many fans hope to see the duo reunite in another project—perhaps in a modern romantic story free from palace intrigue and heartbreaking separation.
