LayarHijau.com – The controversy surrounding the kissing scene in the Chinese youth drama Be Passionately in Love (陷入我们的热恋) has finally been addressed by the production team. Chief producer Yan Yusong revealed that their approach was intentional and agreed upon from the very beginning of the adaptation.
“The way we handled kissing scenes was actually a creative consensus from the start. Be Passionately in Love tells the story of a group of recent high school graduates. So when dealing with emotionally intense scenes, we leaned toward a ‘pure love’ approach,” Yan explained as reported by Sohu.
During filming, the team chose expressions like kissing on the cheek, kissing on the forehead, hugging, and even stepping on each other’s shadows under the moonlight to show emotional intimacy. “This method of leaving blank space is both pure love and heart-warming,” he said.
As for the parts of the drama that have sparked complaints, Yan emphasized that they humbly accept all feedback and are open to audience criticism and suggestions.
Earlier, the Weibo hashtag 刘浩存吻戏 (“Liu Haocun kissing scene”) went viral after viewers realized the scene used a “borrowed kiss” technique — a trick using camera angles or blocking to give the illusion of a kiss without actual physical contact.
Some viewers criticized the decision, arguing it was inconsistent with the novel’s original depiction of the character. Others defended the approach, saying it was appropriate given the high school setting of the story.
Starring Liu Haocun as Xu Zhi and Wang Anyu as Chen Luzhou, the drama premiered in May 2025 and is available on Tencent Video, WeTV, and select regions via Viki. It is adapted from the novel by Er Dong Tu Zi, following the bittersweet romance between two students who are separated after graduation but meet again in university.
The debate has reignited an ongoing question: Should real kissing be expected in romantic dramas, or should an actor’s comfort and the creative team’s vision come first?
