LayarHijau — News regarding Stephen Chow’s latest film, Shaolin Women’s Soccer (女足), sparked a major stir online. Speculation suggested that this kung fu comedy film, which has been in development for years, would be released during the 2026 Chinese New Year period.

However, fans’ hopes must be put on hold. The film’s producer, Tian Qiwen, has repeatedly explained that the visual effects process for the movie is not yet complete. Shaolin Women’s Soccer is confirmed not to be able to make the Lunar New Year holiday slot. Its official release date has been pushed back to Summer 2026, which is considered the right time to capitalize on the global enthusiasm surrounding the FIFA World Cup.

Shaolin Women’s Soccer marks Stephen Chow’s return to the classic kung fu genre combined with a sports theme, a formula he abandoned for many years. The film is reportedly fantastic in budget, reaching 380 million Yuan (approximately US$55.236 million). This figure makes it one of the highest investments for a Mandarin-language sports-themed film.

For maximum visuals, the film utilizes advanced technology such as motion capture and AI rendering. However, this technology takes a very long time for visual effects production. “It’s not that we don’t want to release it sooner, but we simply cannot finish it on time,” explained Tian Qiwen.

The film tells the story of a women’s soccer team called “Emei,” which incorporates martial arts techniques into their game. The main storyline still follows Stephen Chow’s typical formula: underestimated individuals from the grassroots finally rise up and prove their capabilities. This time, the perspective is shifted to a female point of view, with girls taking the lead roles. Conflict arises from the system’s rejection of the non-conventional training methods they use.

The cast of Shaolin Women’s Soccer also draws attention, including big names such as Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat, and Lay Zhang Yixing.

Zhang Xiaofei, who plays the team captain, Shuangshuang, underwent a total transformation. She cut her hair short, darkened her skin, and trained to build muscle. Her appearance is drastically different from her soft image when paired with Jia Ling.

Meanwhile, Dilraba Dilmurat, collaborating with Stephen Chow for the first time, plays a team member named Fan Long. Dilraba is now challenging herself by attempting a comedic rhythm on the big screen.

There is also Lay Zhang Yixing, who plays Xu Feng, a complex character—a technology expert who also betrays his teammates. After receiving praise for his acting in last year’s blockbuster No More Bets (孤注一擲), his selection is expected to ensure good market reception.

Many parties see Shaolin Women’s Soccer as Stephen Chow’s opportunity to shine again in the box office arena. Given that the film brings elements of tough sports, a story of female growth, and a touch of wuxia, the Summer 2026 slot is considered ideal, especially for attracting teenagers and university students, while capitalizing on the World Cup euphoria.
