LayarHijau – In the world of Naruto, ninjas are never limited to a single way of fighting. As long as a mission can be completed, any method is fair game, including illusion-based techniques known as genjutsu. Among the many jutsu shown throughout the series, genjutsu stands out as one of the most dangerous, capable of disabling opponents without physical contact and ending battles in mere moments.
When genjutsu is mentioned, Itachi Uchiha is often regarded as the benchmark of mastery. He is widely known as one of the most formidable genjutsu users in the Naruto universe, largely due to Tsukuyomi, a high-level technique that devastates the target’s mind by manipulating their perception of time. For a long time, Tsukuyomi was believed to be the ultimate genjutsu. However, the story of Naruto itself makes it clear that Tsukuyomi is not the strongest illusionary technique ever introduced.
Tsukuyomi is an ability granted by Itachi’s Mangekyou Sharingan, which he awakened after enduring immense emotional trauma following Shisui Uchiha’s death. Through the Mangekyou Sharingan, Itachi gained three extraordinarily powerful abilities: Amaterasu, Susanoo, and Tsukuyomi.
Amaterasu allows Itachi to summon black flames that relentlessly burn the target until nothing remains. These flames cannot be extinguished by conventional means and are even capable of consuming other fire-based techniques. Susanoo, on the other hand, manifests as a massive spiritual warrior that shields its user from nearly all forms of attack. During his battle with Sasuke, Itachi demonstrated a complete Susanoo equipped with the legendary Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror, weapons that made his defense almost impenetrable.
Despite the overwhelming power of these techniques, Tsukuyomi remained the most feared. With this genjutsu, Itachi traps his opponent in an illusionary realm where time is entirely under his control. In the real world, only a moment passes, but the victim may experience days of intense psychological torment. The consequences are severe, ranging from lasting trauma to complete mental collapse, as seen when Kakashi Hatake was left hospitalized after being subjected to Tsukuyomi.
Even so, Naruto introduces genjutsu that surpasses Tsukuyomi in both subtlety and scale. One such technique is Kotoamatsukami, the signature genjutsu of Shisui Uchiha. What makes Kotoamatsukami especially dangerous is its near-undetectable nature. It allows the user to manipulate another person’s thoughts without their awareness, making the target believe their actions are driven entirely by their own will. The sheer potency of this genjutsu was proven when Itachi used it to break free from Kabuto’s control, something ordinary genjutsu could not achieve.
However, even Kotoamatsukami is not the pinnacle of illusionary techniques. Above all genjutsu introduced in the series stands Infinite Tsukuyomi, a technique on an entirely different level. Infinite Tsukuyomi can only be activated by those who possess the Rinne Sharingan and is cast by reflecting its power onto the moon. Once activated, the moon emits a blinding light that envelops the world, trapping anyone caught in it within an eternal dream.
Victims of Infinite Tsukuyomi are not only immobilized but are also ensnared by the roots of the God Tree, which gradually drains their chakra. Over time, they lose their sense of self and transform into White Zetsu, while the harvested chakra contributes to the creation of the Chakra Fruit. This reveals that Infinite Tsukuyomi is more than just a genjutsu—it is a crucial step in the process of cultivating ultimate power within the Naruto storyline.
Only a handful of individuals are capable of resisting Infinite Tsukuyomi. Those who possess the Rinnegan can block the moon’s light and shield themselves or others. Individuals revived through Edo Tensei are also unaffected, as are those whose bodies are completely covered by Black Zetsu.
With its worldwide reach, irreversible consequences, and extremely limited means of avoidance, Infinite Tsukuyomi is firmly established as the strongest genjutsu in the world of Naruto, surpassing even Tsukuyomi, the technique that once defined Itachi Uchiha’s terrifying reputation.
